Illicium verum (Spice)
Illicium verum, commonly known as star anise, is a spice derived from the star-shaped fruit of a tree native to northeast Vietnam and south China. It has a strong, sweet flavor reminiscent of anise and is often used in cooking, particularly in Asian cuisines. The spice is also a key ingredient in the traditional Chinese five-spice powder.
Star anise contains essential oils, including anethole, which contribute to its distinctive taste and aroma. Beyond culinary uses, it has been utilized in traditional medicine for its potential health benefits, such as antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.
