Illicium
Illicium is a genus of flowering plants in the family Schisandraceae. It includes several species, commonly known as star anise, which is prized for its aromatic star-shaped fruits. These fruits are often used as a spice in cooking and have medicinal properties in traditional medicine.
The most well-known species, Illicium verum, is native to Southeast Asia and is widely cultivated for its culinary uses. The flavor of star anise is similar to that of anise and is a key ingredient in various dishes, including Chinese five-spice powder.
