Depersonalization-derealization disorder is a mental health condition characterized by persistent feelings of detachment from oneself or the surrounding environment. Individuals may feel as if they are observing themselves from outside their body, a sensation known as depersonalization. Alternatively, they might perceive their surroundings as unreal or distorted, referred to as derealization. These experiences can be distressing and may interfere with daily life.
The disorder often occurs in response to stress, trauma, or anxiety, and can affect anyone, though it is more common in adolescents and young adults. While the exact cause is not fully understood, treatment options include therapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, and medication to help manage symptoms.
