Selkup people
The Selkup people are an indigenous group primarily residing in the Russian Federation, particularly in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug and Tomsk Oblast. They are part of the larger Samoyedic peoples and traditionally speak the Selkup language, which belongs to the Uralic language family. Their culture is closely tied to the taiga and tundra environments, where they have historically engaged in reindeer herding, fishing, and hunting.
Traditionally, the Selkup people lived in portable dwellings called chums, which are similar to tents. Their social structure is often organized around extended families, and they have rich oral traditions that include folklore and songs. In recent years, the Selkup have faced challenges related to modernization and the preservation of their cultural heritage.
