Islam in the Philippines
Islam is one of the major religions in the Philippines, primarily practiced in the southern region, particularly in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). The arrival of Islam in the Philippines dates back to the 14th century, brought by traders and missionaries from Arabia and Southeast Asia. Today, Muslims make up about 6% of the country's population, with the largest concentration in Mindanao.
The Moro people are the predominant Muslim ethnic groups in the Philippines, including the Maranao, Maguindanao, and Sama-Bajau. Over the years, there have been various movements for autonomy and recognition of Muslim rights, leading to the establishment of the Bangsamoro government in 2019. This development aims to address historical grievances and promote peace in the region.
