schwannomatosis
Schwannomatosis is a rare genetic condition characterized by the development of multiple benign tumors called schwannomas. These tumors arise from Schwann cells, which are responsible for the myelin sheath that insulates nerves. Unlike neurofibromatosis type 2, individuals with schwannomatosis typically do not develop bilateral vestibular schwannomas, which are tumors on the auditory nerves.
Symptoms of schwannomatosis can include chronic pain, numbness, and weakness, depending on the location of the tumors. Diagnosis often involves imaging studies like MRI and may require genetic testing. Treatment options may include surgery to remove tumors or pain management strategies.
