Neurofibromatosis Type 2
Neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF2) is a genetic disorder characterized by the growth of noncancerous tumors on the nerves, particularly in the brain and spinal cord. It is caused by mutations in the NF2 gene, which plays a role in tumor suppression. Individuals with NF2 often develop bilateral vestibular schwannomas, which can affect hearing and balance.
Symptoms of NF2 may include hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), and balance issues. Diagnosis typically involves imaging tests like MRI to identify tumors. While there is no cure, treatment options such as surgery or radiation therapy can help manage symptoms and complications.
