muqallid
A "muqallid" is a term used in Islamic jurisprudence to refer to a person who follows the legal opinions and rulings of a specific Islamic scholar or school of thought. This practice is common among Muslims who may not have the expertise to interpret religious texts themselves. By adhering to the teachings of a recognized authority, muqallids seek to ensure that their religious practices align with established interpretations of Islamic law.
Muqallid individuals often choose a particular madhhab or school of thought, such as Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, or Hanbali. This choice can be influenced by cultural, familial, or regional factors. While some Muslims advocate for independent reasoning, known as ijtihad, muqallids maintain that following established scholars provides a reliable framework for understanding and practicing their faith.
