Overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom
The overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom occurred in 1893 when a group of American and European businessmen, supported by the U.S. government, staged a coup against Queen Liliʻuokalani. The queen had attempted to implement a new constitution that would restore power to the monarchy and reduce foreign influence.
Following the coup, the new government, known as the Provisional Government of Hawaii, sought annexation by the United States. This led to the eventual formal annexation of Hawaii in 1898, which was met with resistance from many native Hawaiians who opposed the loss of their sovereignty.
