New Russia
"New Russia" refers to a historical region in eastern Ukraine, primarily encompassing parts of the Donetsk, Luhansk, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Odessa oblasts. This area was known for its agricultural productivity and was settled by Russian-speaking populations during the 18th and 19th centuries. The term gained prominence during the conflict in Ukraine, particularly after the annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014.
In contemporary discussions, "New Russia" is often associated with the self-proclaimed republics of Donetsk and Luhansk, which declared independence from Ukraine amid ongoing tensions. The term reflects the geopolitical struggles in the region and the aspirations of some groups for closer ties with Russia. The situation remains complex, with ongoing debates about sovereignty and territorial integrity.
