Nepeta cataria
Nepeta cataria, commonly known as catnip, is a perennial herb belonging to the mint family. It is native to Europe and Asia but has spread to North America. The plant features heart-shaped leaves and small, lavender flowers, and it typically grows to about 1 to 3 feet tall. Catnip is well-known for its ability to induce a euphoric response in many domestic cats due to a compound called nepetalactone.
In addition to its effects on cats, Nepeta cataria has been used in traditional herbal medicine for its mild sedative properties. It can be brewed into tea or used in herbal remedies to help with sleep and digestive issues. The plant is also attractive to pollinators, making it a beneficial addition to gardens.
