Catnip
Catnip is a herb from the mint family, scientifically known as Nepeta cataria. It contains a compound called nepetalactone, which can cause a temporary, euphoric reaction in many cats. When cats smell or chew on catnip, they may exhibit playful behaviors, such as rolling, purring, or jumping.
Not all cats are affected by catnip; sensitivity is hereditary, with about 50-75% of cats responding to it. The effects usually last for about 10 to 15 minutes, after which cats may lose interest. Catnip is safe for cats and can be found in various forms, including dried leaves, sprays, and toys.
