Maya literature
Maya literature refers to the body of written works produced by the ancient Maya civilization, which thrived in Mesoamerica. This literature primarily consists of hieroglyphic texts found on stelae, pottery, and in codices, which are folded books made from bark paper. The texts often include historical accounts, religious rituals, and mythology, reflecting the rich cultural and spiritual life of the Maya.
The most famous examples of Maya literature are the Popol Vuh and the Chilam Balam books. The Popol Vuh is a creation myth that narrates the origins of the world and the adventures of the Hero Twins. The Chilam Balam texts, named after a legendary priest and prophet, contain prophecies, history, and folklore, showcasing the depth of Maya intellectual tradition.
