Chilam Balam
The Chilam Balam is a collection of 17th- and 18th-century Maya texts, written in the Yucatec Maya language using Latin script. It is named after a legendary Maya priest and prophet, Chilam Balam, and is considered one of the most important sources of Maya history, mythology, and prophecy. The texts originate from various towns in the Yucatán Peninsula, with the most famous being the Chilam Balam of Tizimin and the Chilam Balam of Chumayel.
These writings encompass a wide range of topics, including history, astrology, medicine, and rituals. They reflect the fusion of pre-Columbian and colonial Spanish influences, providing insights into the Maya worldview and their responses to European colonization. The Chilam Balam texts are crucial for understanding the cultural heritage of the Maya civilization and its enduring legacy.
