Lingayatism
Lingayatism is a distinct religious tradition that originated in the Indian state of Karnataka during the 12th century. Founded by the saint Basava, it emphasizes devotion to the god Shiva and promotes a personal relationship with the divine. Lingayats reject the caste system and advocate for social equality, focusing on community and ethical living.
The followers of Lingayatism, known as Lingayats, wear a symbol called the Linga, which represents their faith. The religion encourages practices such as prayer, meditation, and community service, fostering a sense of unity among its adherents while maintaining a unique identity within the broader context of Hinduism.
