Sharanas
Sharanas were a group of spiritual practitioners in medieval India, primarily associated with the Lingayat sect. They emphasized devotion to Lord Shiva and promoted a direct, personal relationship with the divine, often through the practice of bhakti or devotion. The Sharanas played a significant role in the social and religious reform movements of their time, advocating for equality and rejecting caste distinctions.
The teachings of the Sharanas were often conveyed through poetry and songs, known as Vachanas. These verses expressed their philosophical ideas and experiences, making spirituality accessible to the common people. Prominent figures among the Sharanas include Basava and Akka Mahadevi, who contributed to the rich cultural and spiritual heritage of the region.
