Janata Party
The Janata Party was a political party in India formed in 1977 after the Emergency period imposed by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. It emerged as a coalition of several opposition parties, including the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, Socialist Party, and Indian National Congress (O). The party aimed to provide an alternative to the ruling Congress party and promote democratic values.
In the 1977 general elections, the Janata Party won a significant victory, leading to the formation of the first non-Congress government in India, with Morarji Desai as the Prime Minister. However, internal conflicts and leadership struggles led to its decline, and by the early 1980s, the party fragmented into smaller factions.
