Historically Black Greek Letter Organizations
Historically Black Greek Letter Organizations (HBGLOs) are fraternities and sororities founded primarily for African American students in the United States. Established during a time of racial segregation, these organizations aimed to provide support, community, and leadership opportunities. The first HBGLO, Alpha Phi Alpha, was founded in 1906 at Cornell University.
HBGLOs promote academic excellence, community service, and cultural awareness. They are part of the Divine Nine, a group of nine prominent organizations that include Delta Sigma Theta, Zeta Phi Beta, and Omega Psi Phi. These organizations continue to play a significant role in fostering brotherhood, sisterhood, and social change within their communities.
