Famous Art Heists
Famous art heists have captured public attention for their audacity and intrigue. One of the most notorious was the 1990 theft at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, where two men disguised as police officers stole 13 pieces of art valued at around $500 million. The stolen works included pieces by Vermeer and Rembrandt, and the case remains unsolved.
Another significant heist occurred in 2004 when a group of thieves stole five paintings from the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. The stolen artworks, including pieces by Vincent van Gogh, were valued at approximately $6 million. The paintings were recovered in 2016, but the heist highlighted vulnerabilities in museum security.
