European Union's Natura 2000 network
The European Union's Natura 2000 network is a system of protected areas aimed at conserving Europe’s most valuable and threatened species and habitats. Established under the Habitats Directive and the Birds Directive, it covers both land and marine environments, ensuring the preservation of biodiversity across member states.
Natura 2000 includes various sites designated as Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) and Special Protection Areas (SPAs). These sites are selected based on their ecological importance, helping to maintain healthy ecosystems and promote sustainable land use while allowing for economic activities that do not harm the environment.
