Cyprus conflict
The Cyprus conflict is a long-standing dispute between the Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots on the island of Cyprus. The conflict began in the mid-20th century, primarily over issues of governance and national identity, leading to tensions and violence. In 1974, a coup by Greek nationalists prompted Turkey to invade, resulting in the island's division into the Republic of Cyprus in the south and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in the north, which is only recognized by Turkey.
Efforts to reunify Cyprus have been ongoing, with various peace talks and proposals over the years. The situation remains complex, involving historical grievances, territorial disputes, and the presence of United Nations peacekeeping forces. Despite international mediation, a lasting resolution has yet to be achieved, leaving the island divided and its communities separated.
