Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus
The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is a self-declared state located on the northern part of the island of Cyprus. It was established in 1983, following a Turkish military intervention in 1974, which was prompted by a coup aimed at uniting Cyprus with Greece. The TRNC is recognized only by Turkey, while the rest of the international community considers it part of the Republic of Cyprus.
The TRNC has its own government, flag, and institutions, but it faces significant political and economic challenges due to its limited recognition. The capital city is North Nicosia, which is the only divided capital in Europe. Efforts for reunification between the TRNC and the Republic of Cyprus have been ongoing but remain unresolved.
