Cryopyrin-Associated Periodic Syndromes
Cryopyrin-Associated Periodic Syndromes (CAPS) are a group of rare genetic disorders caused by mutations in the NLRP3 gene. These conditions lead to uncontrolled inflammation, resulting in recurrent fever, rash, and joint pain. CAPS includes three main types: Familial Cold Autoinflammatory Syndrome, Muckle-Wells Syndrome, and Neonatal-Onset Multisystem Inflammatory Disease.
Individuals with CAPS often experience symptoms triggered by environmental factors, such as temperature changes or infections. Diagnosis typically involves genetic testing, and treatment may include medications like IL-1 inhibitors to reduce inflammation and manage symptoms effectively. Early intervention can improve the quality of life for those affected.
