Conium (Hemlock)
Conium, commonly known as hemlock, is a highly toxic plant belonging to the Apiaceae family. It is native to Europe and parts of Asia but can also be found in North America. The plant features small white flowers and can grow up to 1.5 meters tall. All parts of the hemlock plant contain potent alkaloids, particularly coniine, which can cause severe poisoning.
Historically, hemlock is infamous for its use in the execution of the philosopher Socrates. Consuming even small amounts can lead to symptoms such as nausea, paralysis, and respiratory failure. Due to its toxicity, hemlock is often avoided in gardens and natural areas.
