Compulsion (Obsession)
Compulsion, often linked to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), refers to repetitive behaviors or mental acts that a person feels driven to perform. These actions are typically aimed at reducing anxiety or preventing a feared event, even if the connection between the behavior and the outcome is irrational.
Individuals experiencing compulsion may wash their hands repeatedly, check locks, or count items. Despite recognizing that these behaviors are excessive, they struggle to control them, leading to significant distress and interference in daily life. Treatment options include therapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and medication.
