phelloderm
Phelloderm is a layer of cells found in the bark of woody plants, specifically in the secondary growth of stems and roots. It is produced by the activity of the cork cambium, a type of lateral meristem. Phelloderm cells are typically living and can contribute to the plant's storage and transport functions.
This layer lies just inside the cork layer, which is formed by the cork cambium as well. Phelloderm cells are usually parenchyma cells, which means they are involved in various metabolic processes. Together, phelloderm and cork help protect the plant from environmental damage and water loss.
