War of the First Coalition
The War of the First Coalition (1792-1797) was a conflict between revolutionary France and a coalition of several European monarchies, including Austria, Prussia, Great Britain, and Spain. The war began after the French Revolution, as these nations sought to contain the spread of revolutionary ideas and restore the French monarchy.
The coalition faced various military challenges, with France initially suffering defeats but later gaining ground. Key battles included the Battle of Valmy and the Battle of Fleurus. The war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Campo Formio in 1797, which significantly expanded French territory.
