He was the son of Walter Stewart, 5th High Steward of Scotland and Marjorie Bruce, the daughter of Robert the Bruce. Walter Stewart's lineage positioned him as a key figure in the royal succession, and his descendants would eventually become the kings of Scotland, establishing the House of Stewart.
