Viceroy of India
The Viceroy of India was the British official who governed India on behalf of the British monarch from 1858 to 1947. This position was established after the Indian Rebellion of 1857, which led to the end of the East India Company's rule. The Viceroy was responsible for implementing British policies, maintaining law and order, and overseeing the administration of the vast Indian subcontinent.
The role of the Viceroy included managing relations with Indian princes and addressing social and economic issues. Notable Viceroys include Lord Curzon and Lord Mountbatten, the latter being the last Viceroy who oversaw India's independence and partition into India and Pakistan in 1947.
