Venetian Crete
Venetian Crete refers to the period when the island of Crete was under the control of the Republic of Venice from 1204 to 1669. During this time, the Venetians significantly influenced the island's architecture, culture, and economy. They built impressive fortifications, churches, and palaces, many of which still stand today, showcasing a blend of Gothic and Renaissance styles.
The Venetian rule also transformed Heraklion, the island's capital, into a bustling trade center. The famous Palace of Knossos and other archaeological sites gained attention during this era, as the Venetians promoted tourism and exploration of Minoan history. This period left a lasting legacy on Crete's identity and heritage.
