Cretan History
Cretan history is rich and diverse, beginning with the ancient Minoan civilization around 2000 BCE, known for its advanced architecture and art. The Minoans built impressive palaces, such as the one at Knossos, and developed a writing system called Linear A. Their society thrived until around 1450 BCE, when it was influenced by the Mycenaeans from mainland Greece.
After the decline of the Minoans, Crete experienced various invasions and occupations, including the Roman Empire and later the Byzantine Empire. In the 20th century, Crete was a significant site during both World Wars, particularly noted for the Battle of Crete in 1941. Today, the island's history is reflected in its rich archaeological sites and cultural heritage.
