Urban VI
Urban VI was a pope who reigned from 1378 to 1389. Born Bartolomeo Prignano in Naples, he became the first pope of the Western Schism, a period marked by a split in the Catholic Church with rival popes. His election was controversial, as many believed he was chosen under pressure from the Roman mob.
During his papacy, Urban VI faced significant challenges, including political conflicts and opposition from cardinals who later elected an antipope, Clement VII. His leadership style was often described as harsh, leading to further divisions within the Church and contributing to the ongoing turmoil of the era.
