U.S.-Iran Relations
U.S.-Iran relations have been complex and often tense since the 1979 Iranian Revolution, which led to the overthrow of the U.S.-backed Shah. The establishment of the Islamic Republic of Iran resulted in the severing of diplomatic ties and the taking of American hostages, marking a significant turning point in their relationship. Over the years, issues such as nuclear programs, sanctions, and regional conflicts have further strained interactions.
In recent years, efforts for dialogue have fluctuated, particularly with the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, which aimed to limit Iran's nuclear capabilities in exchange for sanctions relief. However, the U.S. withdrawal from the agreement in 2018 escalated tensions, leading to increased sanctions and military confrontations. The relationship remains a critical focus for both countries and the broader Middle East.
