Tremarctos ornatus
Tremarctos ornatus, commonly known as the Andean bear or spectacled bear, is a species native to the Andean region of South America. It is the only bear species found in South America and is characterized by its distinctive facial markings, which resemble spectacles. These bears typically inhabit cloud forests and mountainous areas, primarily in countries like Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia.
Andean bears are primarily herbivorous, feeding on a diet of fruits, leaves, and flowers, although they may occasionally consume insects. They play a crucial role in their ecosystem by aiding in seed dispersal. With a population that is currently declining due to habitat loss and poaching, they are classified as vulnerable by the IUCN.
