Trans World Airlines Flight 847
On June 14, 1985, Trans World Airlines Flight 847, a commercial flight from Athens to San Diego, was hijacked by members of the Hezbollah group shortly after takeoff. The aircraft, a Boeing 727, was diverted to Beirut, where the hijackers held passengers and crew hostage for several days.
During the standoff, the hijackers demanded the release of their comrades imprisoned in Israel. The situation escalated, leading to the tragic death of a U.S. Navy diver, Robert Stethem, who was among the hostages. The crisis ended on June 30, 1985, when the remaining hostages were released.
