The Exonerated Five
The Exonerated Five refers to five Black teenagers—Kevin Richardson, Raymond Santana, Antron McCray, Yusef Salaam, and Korey Wise—who were wrongfully convicted in the 1989 rape and assault of Trisha Meili, a white female jogger in Central Park, New York City. Their convictions were based on coerced confessions and flawed evidence, leading to their imprisonment for years.
In 2002, Matias Reyes, a convicted murderer, confessed to the crime, and DNA evidence confirmed his involvement. The case was reopened, and the convictions of the Exonerated Five were vacated, highlighting issues of racial bias and wrongful convictions in the criminal justice system.
