Setsubun is a traditional Japanese festival celebrated on February 3rd, marking the transition from winter to spring. It is associated with the lunar calendar and is a time for purification and renewal. During this event, people throw roasted soybeans, known as fukumame, to drive away evil spirits and invite good fortune into their homes.
Families often perform a ritual called mamemaki, where they toss the beans while chanting, "Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!" which means "Demons out! Luck in!" Many also enjoy eating ehomaki, a special sushi roll, to ensure good luck for the year ahead.
