Mamemaki is a traditional Japanese custom celebrated during the Setsubun festival, which marks the beginning of spring. The practice involves throwing roasted soybeans, called fuku mame, to drive away evil spirits and invite good fortune. Participants often shout "Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!" meaning "Demons out! Luck in!" as they toss the beans.
Typically, families perform mamemaki at home, with one person dressed as an oni (demon) to enhance the experience. After the beans are thrown, they are often collected and eaten, with each person consuming the number of beans corresponding to their age for good luck in the coming year.
