Mame-maki
Mame-maki is a traditional Japanese custom celebrated during the Setsubun festival, which marks the beginning of spring. The practice involves throwing roasted soybeans, known as fukumame, to drive away evil spirits and invite good fortune. Participants often shout "Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!" meaning "Demons out! Luck in!" as they toss the beans.
This ritual is typically performed in homes and temples, with families gathering to participate. After the beans are thrown, it is customary to eat the same number of beans as one's age, plus one for good luck in the coming year.
