Seizure Types
Seizure types are categorized based on how they affect the brain and body. The two main categories are focal seizures, which start in one area of the brain, and generalized seizures, which affect both sides. Focal seizures can cause changes in awareness or unusual sensations, while generalized seizures often involve loss of consciousness and widespread muscle contractions.
Within these categories, there are several specific types. For example, tonic-clonic seizures are a type of generalized seizure characterized by stiffening and jerking movements. In contrast, absence seizures are brief episodes of staring and lack of awareness, often seen in children. Understanding these types helps in effective diagnosis and treatment.
