Ragas
Ragas are melodic frameworks used in Indian classical music that guide musicians in improvisation and composition. Each ragas consists of a specific set of notes, known as swaras, and is associated with particular emotions, times of day, or seasons.
The performance of a raga typically involves a slow introduction, called alap, followed by a rhythmic section with tala, or beats. Ragas are not just scales; they embody a unique mood and character, allowing musicians to express deep feelings and connect with their audience.
