A Pap smear is a medical test used to screen for cervical cancer in individuals with a cervix. During the procedure, a healthcare provider collects cells from the cervix using a small brush or spatula. These cells are then examined in a laboratory to check for any abnormalities that could indicate cancer or precancerous conditions.
It is recommended that individuals start getting Pap smears at age 21 and continue every three years until age 29. From ages 30 to 65, they may choose to have a Pap smear combined with an HPV test every five years or continue with Pap smears alone every three years.
