Mother Emanuel
"Mother Emanuel" refers to the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, located in Charleston, South Carolina. Founded in 1816, it is one of the oldest African American congregations in the United States. The church has a rich history, playing a significant role in the civil rights movement and serving as a center for community support and activism.
On June 17, 2015, the church became the site of a tragic mass shooting, where nine members were killed during a prayer service by Dylann Roof. This event sparked national conversations about race, gun violence, and the importance of forgiveness and healing within the community.
