Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church
The Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, often referred to as Emanuel AME, is a historic church located in Charleston, South Carolina. Founded in 1816, it is one of the oldest African American congregations in the United States. The church has a rich history of community service and social justice, reflecting the struggles and resilience of African Americans throughout the years.
Tragically, Emanuel AME gained national attention in June 2015 when a mass shooting occurred during a prayer service, resulting in the deaths of nine parishioners. This event highlighted issues of racism and gun violence in America, prompting widespread discussions and calls for change within the community and beyond.
