Monobactam
Monobactam is a class of antibiotics that are effective against certain types of bacteria, particularly Gram-negative bacteria. They work by inhibiting the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall, which ultimately leads to the death of the bacteria. One of the most well-known monobactams is aztreonam, which is often used to treat infections in patients who are allergic to penicillin.
Monobactams are typically administered through injection and are used in various clinical settings, including hospitals. They are particularly valuable for treating infections caused by bacteria that are resistant to other antibiotics. Due to their specific action, monobactams have a lower risk of cross-reactivity in patients with penicillin allergies.
