Medieval Maps
Medieval maps, often referred to as mappaemundi, were created during the Middle Ages and reflect the worldview of that time. These maps typically depicted the known world, combining geographical knowledge with religious and mythological elements. They often placed Jerusalem at the center, emphasizing its significance in Christianity.
Unlike modern maps, medieval maps were not always accurate in terms of scale or distance. Instead, they focused on illustrating important locations, trade routes, and the boundaries of kingdoms. Many maps were adorned with intricate illustrations of monsters, animals, and historical figures, showcasing the blend of art and geography in medieval cartography.
