Preservation techniques were essential, as refrigeration did not exist. People used methods like salting, smoking, and pickling to keep food from spoiling. Ingredients such as herbs, honey, and cheese were commonly used, and meals often featured bread, which was a staple for all classes during the Middle Ages.
