Mary of Cleves
Mary of Cleves was a noblewoman born in 1453 in the Duchy of Cleves, which is now part of modern-day Germany. She was the daughter of John I, Duke of Cleves and Matilda of Guelders. Mary is best known for her marriage to Henry VIII of England in 1540, which was part of his quest for a political alliance and a male heir.
Her marriage to Henry VIII was short-lived, as it was annulled just six months later. Despite this, Mary remained in England and was treated with respect, receiving a generous settlement. She later returned to her homeland, where she lived until her death in 1558.
