Maria Teresa Mirabal
Maria Teresa Mirabal was a Dominican political activist born on February 15, 1935. She was one of the three Mirabal sisters, known as the Las Mariposas (The Butterflies), who opposed the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo in the Dominican Republic. Maria Teresa, along with her sisters, became involved in the underground movement against Trujillo's oppressive regime.
On November 25, 1960, Maria Teresa and her sisters were assassinated by Trujillo's secret police. Their deaths sparked outrage and became a symbol of the struggle against tyranny. In 1999, the United Nations designated November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women in their honor.
