Las Mariposas
"Las Mariposas" refers to the butterflies that symbolize freedom and transformation. In many cultures, butterflies are seen as a representation of the soul and are often associated with beauty and change. The term can also refer to the famous Mirabal Sisters, who were known as "Las Mariposas" in the Dominican Republic for their role in opposing the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo.
The Mirabal Sisters, Patria, Minerva, and María Teresa, became symbols of resistance against oppression. Their activism led to their assassination in 1960, which sparked outrage and ultimately contributed to the fall of Trujillo's regime. Today, their legacy is honored on November 25, recognized as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
